The Home Office has confirmed that it will automatically upgrade pre-settled status to settled status for eligible individuals.
During the first phase, pre-settled status will be extended by 5 years shortly before its expiration to ensure that no one loses their rights if they have not applied in time.
Additionally, the Home Office will verify whether the individual qualifies for settled status. These eligibility checks, which are a standard part of the scheme, will be conducted automatically. If a pre-settled status holder meets the eligibility criteria, they will be granted settled status, and their digital status will be updated in UKVI account automatically.
The first group of pre-settled status holders will soon be notified that their status is being reviewed for automatic conversion to settled status under the new process. The initial grants of settled status through this automated system are expected to be issued in the coming weeks. No action is required from pre-settled status holders at this stage, and the Home Office will keep them informed throughout the process.
Additional checks will be carried out to confirm that pre-settled status holders continue to meet the requirements of the EU Settlement Scheme before their status is upgraded to settled status. If the available records verify that a pre-settled status holder qualifies for settled status, they will be granted settled status and provided with a confirmation. Their digital status will be automatically updated, enabling them to view and share their status as normal.
If the Home Office lacks sufficient data to confirm eligibility for an automatic grant of settled status, the individual will be contacted with guidance on next steps and reminded of the need to maintain compliance with their current status requirements.
In late 2025, the Home Office plans to broaden this process, allowing more eligible pre-settled status holders to be transitioned to settled status without needing to submit an application. Cases that could not be converted to settled status during the initial phase may be reviewed again under the expanded process.
The Home Office is also evaluating the appropriate steps for cases where pre-settled status holders have failed to maintain continuous residence in the UK and no longer meet the conditions of their status. Further updates on these cases will be provided in due course.
