The Global Talent visa generates great interest in various migrant's communities because it offers the freedom to work in the UK, the ability to start a business, and the opportunity to obtain permanent residency after 3 years. However, in our experience, most applicants greatly underestimate the amount of work involved in applying for endorsement under the Global Talent visa. This is especially relevant for endorsing organizations that require the provision of up to 10 supporting documents (such as the Arts Council), a 1000-word personal statement (e.g., the British Academy), or both (e.g., Tech Nation). And this is even before you start approaching other leaders in your field to ask for letters of recommendation. The application preparation process can sometimes take up to a year, even for very talented people with extensive experience in international competitions.

If you have started preparing to apply for the Global Talent visa, we suggest you answer yourself three questions:

  1. WHAT IS MY FIELD? This question defines your application. The bar for being recognized as an "exceptional talent" and "leader in your field" is high. Therefore, you need to narrow down and carefully consider your field and reflect the result in your application. Of course, you need to find a balance between narrow specialization and compliance with the program's requirements.

  2. DO I MEET THE CRITERIA? Many applicants do not read the guidelines in detail. Some guidelines are very detailed and prescriptive regarding exactly what the endorsing organization expects to see in terms of the evidence provided (e.g., Tech Nation). The guidelines can also be very specific about what you need to have achieved in your career to date and examples of evidence. Tech Nation wants to hear about your experience in innovation, for example. The Arts Council will be more interested in the recognition you have received in the media for the quality of your work. All aspects of a Global Talent visa application should be focused on the criteria.

  3. HOW DOES MY EVIDENCE SHOW THAT I MEET THE CRITERIA? Some applicants read the criteria but do not think deeply enough about how exactly their evidence supports this. It is important to link all the evidence provided with the criteria you aim to meet and document this in the application.
